IPAQ love (2008-05-13)
The best by far. This is my second one. I wanted a back up in case there is ever a problem.
It has everything necessary for business including wi-fi.
I love this thing!

five years later, I still think of it as the best PDA available! (2008-01-08)
When I bought it five years ago (or something like that), I thought it was the best PDA then... now, I can say it again.

It has one of the best screens I've ever seen, with VGA resolution.

It has bluetooth and Wi-fi. My only complain here is that from time to time, the Bluetooth refuses to turn on due to a "low memory" warning, that you can get rid of it by sof-reseting the device (or nor overhelming the main memory with too many small applications!).

With SD and CF, it has all the possibilities available!

And the magnesium case is great!! at least someone took a breath and actually tought, and found out that puting a plastic case on a PDA worth $600, intended for professional use, wasn't such a great idea (most of the new ones, worth that still have plastic cases!).

I have nothing but good words for it!!

This unit is great. Have had it for over a year now and it is flawless in operation. Hope they keep making it or a better updated version as time goes on. Upgraded to Windows Mob. 5 and it work fine as well. TON of memory and takes CF and SD cards. I have 1 gig ultrs in it now. Holds a TON of pictures and maps for pocketstreets, which I use often. I put a GPS card in it and and I have Navigation ability with Pocket-Streets... and yes holds and plays video and music with mob. MSplayer 10

What I like about my hx4705 (2006-10-07)
This is my fourth Windows PDA, first 3 were from Compaq.
Let me add some beneficial features which have not been mentioned:
a. It is one of two Hp iPaqs which will run Windows mobile 5.0. I found that Windows Mobile 5.0 makes wireless internet access easier and faster.
b. Be sure to use Active Sync v 4.2. Syncing is very quick over USB 2.0.
c. This device runs .Net compact framework 2.0. I build apps for it using Visual Studio 2003 & 2005.
d. I use the onboard excel app constantly and move spreadsheets between it and my PC. Running Excel natively is a huge feature for me.
e. Windows mobile 5.0 includes a media player which sounds better than the previous one. This PDA is a great digital media player.
f. I read PDF manuals using a pcoket Acrobat reader. The beautiful screen is very useful for this.
g. Pocket Streets & downloadable maps. Buy Microsoft Streets & trips and get this for free. Map display is more vivid and colorful with this release.
Summary:
This device has enormous potential which it should, given its high price.

Great spec - expensive, unreliable and no longer made (2006-08-14)
I've had one for 9 months and it's a great PDA, albeit a bit power hungry for the battery shipped. Love the screen.

But it's fragile, and when mine broke HP claimed I'd opened the case voiding the warranty (i hadn't ?!?), and wanted 270 bucks.

I don't know anyone who still has one. Shame, it was a great PDA. I've heard they're discontinued now. But you can't spend this kind of money for something that won't even make it a year.

Best choice I've made (2008-05-31)
When my palm pilot (tungsten e) died, I found out that the problem was that it was only my battery. I went to a specialized battery store and they said it would cost ~$70 to buy this battery from them. I realized that this wasn't close to a good deal, so I shopped around online. I am soooo thankful. I found this for a total of ~$17,- including shipping - and that includes directions with pictures, the screwdrivers needed to open the palm, and the battery (which turned out to be a high-capacity battery, which is even better than I expected). it was perfectly new,and was easy to solder in (yes, you do have to solder, but I am fourteen and have only soldered once before. There is already solder/flux there for you to use, so all you really need is the soldering iron (i borrowed one from a friend)The only problem that I had was closing up the case again (i didn't realize I needed to use a little force- hey, I didn't want to break it). Just be careful with the soldering iron, as it can melt the plastic case around the motherboard. Please, back up all of your data before replacing the battery.
BOTTOM LINE: I would definitely recommend buying from Osprey Talon. It's a heck of a lot better than paying $70 for the same battery.

Good battery, tricky installation (2008-02-08)
Battery installation: My husband is an electrical engineer so he wasn't afraid to tackle this problem. What's the worst that could happen? He breaks my Tungsten E and I "have" to buy a new and improved model. So, we jumped in to see if we could revive my old Palm for under twenty bucks. The installation of this battery was a little scary at times. It's rather hard to pull the old battery off the board. It's just stuck on with double stick tape but you have to pull hard and the circuit board is bending a little and we thought we were going to break something. However, it did come off and we didn't break anything. The new battery comes with double stick tape on one side but, if you glue that side down then the wires come out of the battery the opposite side from the original. We decided to glue down the side of the battery that did not have the double stick tape on it so we could match the original battery. Putting the thing back together, getting everything to line up again was mildly worrisome but not really a problem. In the end, the case snapped back togther and everything looked good as new.

Backing up your data before installing the new battery: I saw several web sights warning that you should use special software to fully backup the data on your Palm before doing this installation. I didn't do that. I just synched my Palm with my PC as usual and hoped for the best. After charging the battery overnight I turned it on and it looked like it was brand new, starting from scratch. I followed the directions on my Palm, re-aligned the pointer, re-synched with my PC and voila! everything was back to normal, exactly like before. My Outlook data was all there, the games that I had purchased were there, my menus were the same. If I had not watched my husband do this, I would not have been able to tell anything happened. I don't know if other people have lost some of their data but I was happy to find that just my usual PC synch did the trick.

That was 3 days ago. I had to charge the battery last night, after 3 days of my normal use. I honestly can't remember what the original battery was like 3 years ago to compare. So, if you are not shy about taking things apart and soldering (it's an extremely easy soldering job if you have the tool already), then I say go for it. This battery came with the mini screw drivers and printed instructions and I recommend it.

Great Deal!!! (2007-04-05)
If you're not wanting to fork out the big bucks to replace the battery in a PDA that isn't in stores anymore, but you also don't want to fork out 300+ dollars for a new one, this is your best bet. Soldering the battery is easy. Just buy a wood burning iron in the craft section at walmart for 10 bucks, it does the job nicely. the kit comes with the screwdriver you need to get those tiny screws out, which is a plus, but you will need like a flat head screw driver or something thin that you can pry open the shell with (do this slowly or you will screw up everything on the board). To get you use to soldering, just practice unsoldering the wire connected to the old battery. Remember where the wires are connected to, or you will mess up your PDA. Charge from 2-3 hours.
All in all, a great way to save money and get your money's worth out of the Tungsten E

Pc 2003 drivers don't seem to be currently available......at all (2008-09-17)
Perhaps at one time someone had a work around for this card but if it's still out there someplace I sure can't find it anywhere any longer in 2008. If your ppc still running 2002 you're fine but Belkin never released a driver for this guy for 2003, supposed to be the same as Dell's truemobile 300 but I've had no luck making it work and on a toshiba e805 your second issue is a bluetooth stack because there doesn't seem to be one built in on the us version of this pda. There are two versions of this card, version 2 has squared corners and that one works with widcomm drivers and stack but this version doesn't. I'm returning it can't find a way to get it working bought a sirf III cf gps instead, a shame because I already have a good bluetooth gps but the american 805 has only wifi no bluetooth...agggh don't believe the other reviews because if the stuff is still out there to make it work I sure can't find it. Buy it on a credit card because this seller makes a secret of his return policy....possibly more to come.

Works with PocketPC 2003 but not al functions (2007-02-20)
In Aximsite there is a Guide to use this card with PPC 2003 ( named "Bluetooth CF card for $20") and works.. but not all functions.
This is the problem with this solution :
"The PPC denies any other BT device to connect via OBEX and see my files, while the other way around works (yes, I checked all security/encryption checkboxes, nothing works). For example, I can flawlessly connect to a Nokia or Motorola BT phone and see its files, but these phones can't connect on my PPC and see my files.."

Gonzalo.

Works very well with PPC 2003 (2005-12-09)
The Drivers that comes with this unit can only work with PPC 2002 but follow the link below that will give you the step by step instructions on how to install the drivers for PPC 2003.
I use this adapter with my Axim X5 and TomTom Navigator 5 and it works perfectly.

All the best.

Great reviews but you're not being helpful (2005-09-08)
I'm one of those people stuck with this card, running windows CE and hence up the creek with NO driver. Those of you that found drivers, please tell us where you found them (links, please) or what they were called. Otherwise your reviews are not very helpful.

Thanks!

Pocket PC 2003 drivers are available, but... (2005-08-12)
Yes, the driver and registry update are available for 2003 even though the company that wrote them no longer exists. I have this card working on my Dell Axim X5. It works with my GPS receiver and my laptop. But as has been noted, Dial-Up Networking does not work. [...]

Great Solution (2008-06-06)
I have two 3635 PDA's that no longer hold a charge at all. I was skeptical if this battery would revive my Ipaq, but, to my surprise IT DID?

I installed the battery into each PDA to make sure it would power it and it did.

I've just order a 2nd battery.

I was afraid I'd have to throw away these PDA's I spend a few hundred buck a piece for. But no worry, problem solved and I've given one to the wife and one to the teenager.

Highly recommend.

Best alternative to keep your iPaq running (2005-10-17)
My Ipaq 3630 was more than three years old and the lithium-ion battery doesn't hold a charge more than a day. So I got the 2400mA replacement battery and now I can listen to my MP3 continuously for 3 hours+.

Amazon.com Review
The Palm m125 is similar to the Palm m100 and m105 in its shape and classic, powerful Palm organizer functions. But it also offers several features that elevate it above the other two models--a memory card expansion slot, bonus software, and compatibility with peripherals for i705 and m500 series models.

The curved base of the Palm m125 fits snugly and comfortably in the palm of your hand. It features a protective cover that flips up and is flexible at the end--a nice touch to prevent damage if you scrape it against anything while opening. It also has a window on the cover that lets you check the time by pressing the button that pokes through.

Like other Palm handhelds the Palm m125 doesn't have a keyboard. Instead, you write shorthand-like strokes on the special writing area at the bottom of the backlit grayscale screen, which the m125 recognizes as letters. You can also tap with the stylus to type letters using an onscreen keyboard, as well as open menus and select icons. (For more keying power, you might consider the optional Palm portable keyboard.)

The Palm operating system (OS) is very efficient, so the 8 MB memory is enough to store a lot of data and quite a few applications, too. If you want to add more applications or content, you have two choices. First, you can find applications and e-books on the Web, download them to your desktop or laptop hard drive, and synchronize the data using the USB HotSync cradle, which attaches to the Palm universal connector at the base of the handheld. It's the same connector as on the m500 and m505 and Palm has promised to support it for three years, so there should be plenty of peripherals available.

Your other option is to use the expansion slot on the side of the handheld, which accepts Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMediaCard (MMC) memory cards. Palm offers a number of expansion cards with content (such as e-books and Lonely Planet travel guides), applications (the PalmPak language translator, for example), and games. You can also store applications and content on memory cards (such as those from Viking or SanDisk) without sacrificing any of the Palm m125's 8 MB memory.

The Palm m125 comes with Palm OS 4.0, which has new e-mail and Web browsing software, and enables you to send SMS (Short Message Service). You can use infrared to connect to your cell phone for a wireless connection, or add an optional modem to connect to a standard phone line.

In addition to the standard built-in utilities and the Palm Desktop application (for both Windows and Mac), you get extra software including an e-book reader, Documents To Go (for viewing and editing Word and Excel documents), and AvantGo (which downloads Web content, such as news from BBC or the latest soccer scores).

For a budget PDA, the small, light Palm m125 has some nice design touches, is loaded with software extras, and can be customized with thousands of available Palm OS applications. It may not be the most powerful PDA on the market, but its expansion capabilities certainly kick it up a notch. --Mary Branscombe and Agen G.N. Schmitz

Pros:

  • Expansion card slot for SD and MMC memory cards
  • Lots of bonus software, including Documents To Go and Mobile Internet Kit software
  • USB universal connector ready for lots of peripherals
Cons:
  • Not as thin as the Palm m500 series

Palm m125 user and advice (2007-03-25)
I am satisfied with this product except for the battery usage. Turns out that in some of these units the 'ultracapacitors' were leaking and eventually were shorting out. Ultracapacitors maintain the device memory during battery changes. This leaking/shorting caused the following:
- immediate loss of data memory when batteries removed
- high drain of new batteries - sometimes only lasting 1 day in my case

If you are technically handy with a soldering iron, you can order 2 new ultracapacitor parts from Digikey (<$10) and solder them in yourself. I did this 3 years ago and have had great results - no loss of memory when changing batteries and new batteries last over 3-4 weeks with moderate use.

PERFECT! (2006-03-28)
The m125 is deffientally worth it's wieght in gold. At my middle school, there has been a Palm Pilot craze, and at the same time, I found myself wishing for something to help me keep organized. I tried a paper panner, but it was too bulky and heavy to carry around all day. I was just looking for a simple Palm Pilot and found the m125. It was PERFECT!

I love the m125! It is perfect for 13- year olds like me who just need something simple and nothing too fancy. The m125 is what I found to be a wonderful Palm Pilot. It has lots of expansion cards and I bought a games one, an eBooks card, and the E-mail expansion.

I also like the m125 because of it's size and price. I can tuck my m125 in my binder and carry it around with me. And I found it to be one of the cheepest, best working Palm Pilots i've ever seen.

But one thing, the batteries run out really quickly(like anywhere from 4 days to one week), and my family is getting tired of our battery "bill".

But overall, if you need a small, compact Palm Pilot, then this is you "Ticket". I highly reccmond getting a m125!

A Great Palm Pilot (2005-08-26)
I was given an m125 as a gift to help me keep track of my appointments. I found it to be very useful, and the one I had worked optimally. It takes notes, has a calendar, lets me make lists, draw little pictures, play some simple games... it's great. And if I use it normally without playing games much (just to save info, which is the main use for it after all) the batteries last a few weeks, and it's no big deal to back up the data at the end of every day, just like I would charge my cell phone at the end of a long day. (Make sure you always back up your data! It won't save it when you remove the batteries, but it's very easy to restore it at synch time once you put new batteries in.)

It's a great PDA... Palm is pretty awesome. Sure, there's always something to be desired - we always want more than what we have, but for the basic things, this is a great machine.

I really don't think it is fair for a few people to write reviews based on a units that are basically malfunctioning. I strongly suggest people ignore reviews like that. Before you pay for a unit, see that you have some kind of protection ahead of time, if you are really worried, check with your bank or credit card company first.

Palm, a Disappointment (2005-05-29)
I have been a user of PDA's for quite awhile. I have only owned Palm Pilots. The first one I owned worked fantastic, it was my life. I used it for appointments, directions, and a rolodex. It was my life blood. Somewhere, someplace, I lost that Palm Pilot. I figured I would upgrade and I purchased the new version M series. I got the M125. After awhile I could not set my time or date, I just could not press the lower left hand done button. I ran out of battery power and by the time I got back to my computer, or a drug store, for new batteries, the memory was wiped out. No problem if only I could set the date to coordinate my calendar with the true date. I looked on the web and found that it was a prevalent problem with the M Series. To replace the touch screen would have been $40.00. I purchased a fairly new M125 on eBay and sure enough, it had some issues. But I was able to set the date. I guess when I have the money to invest in a color screen like the Compaq unit, which I see is a flawless product, I will purchase it.

I don't think I would ever purchase a Palm product again.

Must be like the old Volvos (2005-04-02)
Remember when you were a kid and automobiles were less "consistent" than they are now? I can recall friends of my parents who had Volvos and either loved theirs or hated it. You either got one that worked well, or you got a lemon. My m125 is a lemon. My wife bought it for my birthday a while back and I made the mistake of putting off using it. By the time I tried to get it to speak to my computer (Outlook never happened), stop freezing up, move from one function to another, and just BEHAVE, there was no warranty left. It is a dog, with fleas. Customer Service sent a lengthy form tutorial via e-mail, that basically told me to "reboot". Fool that I am, I tried that a few times. My wife gets to stare at the world's cutest white elephant every time she sits down at her CPU. Her disappointment is palpable. The lesson, then, was two-fold. Take it out for a spin during the warranty period, or don't buy it at all. My own lesson will be to get a Dell.
